SaaS Explained in Less Than 800 words
In our fast-paced lives, we keep searching for ways which can make our lives easier, our times more worthwhile and our work more efficient.
Fifteen years back, the technological world was blessed with a new advancement: The SaaS model.
It helped to make our lives easier and more convenient. Furthermore, it proved to be cost-cutting and made technology more connected, fast-paced, and updated.
If you are fairly new to the world of SaaS, this is going to be one hell of a ride for you.
We are going to break down the complications that you might be facing in understanding the SaaS model.
WHAT IS SaaS?
The first thing that we need to know is that SaaS stands for Software as a Service.
It is a software distribution model that permits data to be retrieved by ANY DEVICE that has a web browser and internet connection.
The users of SaaS models can connect and use cloud-based applications as long as they have an internet connection and a computer or mobile device.
Yep, that’s all you require to access a SaaS product.
Some successful examples of SaaS models which are offered by SaaS companies are :
Slack: A cloud-based application that makes team collaboration faster and efficient.
Salesforce: It is a cloud-based Customer Relationship Management (CRM) software.
Dropbox: A cloud storage service that allows saving files online and syncs them to our devices.
There are lots and lots of examples that I can further add but I think that these three services are enough to give you people a general idea of how easy and efficient our lives are due to SaaS models.
STEPPING BACK IN THE HISTORY:
We are going to take a step back in history for all the curious souls who are wondering about the origin of the SaaS model.
The foundation was laid way back in 1961, when John McCarthy, a famous computer scientist quoted:
“ Computation may someday be organized as a public utility.”
In simple words, the idea of cloud computing began as a shared resource of computing power. The concept turned into reality till 1999 when companies like Salesforce started offering their services.
In the beginning, enterprises were hesitant to adopt SaaS products but over the span of the last decade, it has shown rapid growth and adoption.
GOOGLE AND ITS RULE :
The world of SaaS sky-rocketed because of the very popular SaaS company that you all are probably familiar with: GOOGLE.
It is kind of impossible that anyone reading this blog would be unfamiliar with this huge tech giant.
Let’s take a look at some well-known SaaS products launched by google that the majority of you might be using:
Gmail
Google Docs
G Suite
Youtube
Google started with a search engine and ended up transforming the digital world by launching its SaaS products.
WARNING: FIGURES AND NUMBERS AHEAD
People who are bad at math (like me) can still keep reading this as I am going to keep it real simple, don’t worry.
In the past 10 years, there has been a HUGE increase in SaaS companies.
11,000 privately-owned SaaS companies have been founded in just a decade.
In 2022, it is estimated that the worth of the SaaS market is going to be $220.2 billion.
That’s one hefty amount!
ADVANTAGES OF SaaS:
You probably have a general idea about what these services are, so now we are going to head forward and discuss how a SaaS model can be beneficial for you.
I don't need a hard disk in my computer if I can get to the server faster... carrying around these non-connected computers is byzantine by comparison. - Steve Jobs
Let’s dive right into some of the main advantages of SaaS:
1.ACCESS TO SOPHISTICATED APPLICATIONS :
Easy access to sophisticated applications because of affordable prices. Sophisticated SaaS applications like CRM and ERP are made affordable for companies that lack the ability to purchase, deploy, and manage the required infrastructure themselves.
With a SaaS app, there is no more hassle of purchasing, updating, installing any hardware, middleware, or software.
2.USE IT, PAY IT:
The SaaS model is automated to scale higher and lower according to your usage.
It will be cost-cutting as you will be paying only for what you are using!
This is a huge advantage as who doesn’t like to save money? I surely do.
3.EASY ACCESS OF DATA:
You have all-time access to your data through ANY computer or mobile which has an internet connection. It will help in mobilizing your workforce as well.
A SaaS-Y GOODBYE
